The Clogher Heritage Complex includes the Heritage Cottage and Staunton’s Forge. In the Cottage Garden there is a display of vintage farm machinery and a picnic area with a water feature.
The land on which the cottage and garden stands was donated by Mrs. B. Cosgrave and family of Newtown, Clogher.

The Heritage Cottage is newly constructed, built in 2003, the labour and expertise supplied by our local FÁS CE Scheme.

The restored working forge is open to visitors - Stauntons Forge, Newtown was authentically rebuilt in its former form in 1999,and it reopened in 2001.

Every effort has been made to reproduce a typical one bed roomed labourers’ cottage, it includes a cailleach (a bed in an alcove) and a loft. The loft would have been used as extra bed space but currently contains an excellent display of churns and other artifacts. Local residents have donated many of the items on display

The Heritage Complex is also the starting point for the Clogher Bog Walk, a loop walk of 8km. The walk takes in the biodiversity of the flora of the bogland, which is a unique habitat for both common and rare protected species.
There are many archaeological features worth viewing on the walk and in the locality. A selection of these is on this site as well as a collection of folklore tales and history of the area.

A grant from the Leader Board plus locally generated donations and fundraising financed this.

Start from the village of Ballintubber just off the N84 Castlebar to Ballinrobe road. Approximately 100mtrs past Ballintubber Abbey, which is located to your right, look out for the fingerpost sign pointing you in the direction to Clogher. Turn left and follow this road for approximately 4km. At the place where you find the Ray Prendergast GAA ground to your left, take the next left turning which is marked 'Newtown’ and 'Catford’. The Clogher Heritage Centre is approximately 1km down this road.

Many interesting archaeological features can be seen in the area, from neolithic times to the more recent past. Some details and pictures can be found here.

The bog loop walk abounds in wild flowers, bog plants and a diverse range of animal life too. Some botanical and biological information is provided for guidance.

Much turf cutting was evident in the past to provide the fuel for the hearth. In the present day there’s little done on the Clogher bog although it’s by no means ceased altogether in the district. We have some pictures of how it was done both past and present, by hand and with machinery.
